Ceramics

The Champaign Park District offers a full range of ceramics classes for anyone ages 6 and up. Classes are taught by experienced instructors who are gifted at bringing out the artist in you. Their wealth of experience, education, and knowledge will truly make this an enjoyable experience for you and/or your family. We also offer group workshops.


COVID Health Precautions

Class participants must wear a face covering while in the Springer Cultural Center and Ceramic Studio. A snug fitting mask is best. Participants will be provided with tools and towels to use during class. Please do not bring tools, supplies, bags, or other personal items into the Springer Cultural Center. When possible, participants should maintain a distance of 6 feet from others. No waiting area will be provided, only registered participants are allowed in the building. Additional information will be provided before the class starts.

MOTHER’S DAY POTTERY

Ages 5-15 with parent/guardian
Spend some creative quality time with Mom! In this fun family workshop, parents and kids will work together to create and decorate a special piece of pottery. Open to parents of all genders and children ages 5-15. (Children must be accompanied by an adult participant; limit two children per adult.) Youth Ceramics

POTS FOR TOTS

Age 3-5 with parent/guardian
Bring your littlest artist along for a new creative experience! You and your small child will work together to make a piece of pottery personalized with handprints, names, and their own artistic designs. Young children will enjoy the hand-on tactile quality of clay, and your finished piece will be permanent and food-safe. Pieces will be ready for pick up in approximately 2 weeks. ROCKET POTS!

Ages 6-12
Create a rocket ship that is out of this world! Kids will learn pottery hand-building techniques to sculpt and decorate a clay rocket that doubles as a box (to hold secret space stuff, of course.) No experience needed. Fee includes all materials. Pottery will be ready to pick up about two weeks after the workshop.

MAKE A MUG

Ages 15+
Learn how to make beautiful mugs without using a pottery wheel! We will use slab and hand-building techniques to create unique, fully functional mugs. In addition to learning basic methods for shaping clay, you will learn about the ceramic process and finish your pieces with ceramic glazes. This class is perfect for beginners with no previous clay experience, and is also for potters who usually work on the wheel to expand their skills. Finished pieces will be food safe, and can be put in the microwave and dishwasher. Pottery is ready to be picked up approximately 2 weeks after class. Fee includes all materials. Workshop consists of two classes.

Adult Ceramics

VIRTUAL POTTERY CLASS

Ages 15+
Learn to create beautiful hand-made pottery in the comfort and safety of your home. The instruction in this class is virtual, but the pottery and the fun are very real! We will loan you a Pottery Kit that includes basic tools, a canvas work surface, project templates, and 25 lbs of clay. Through weekly instructional videos, our staff will walk you through everything you need know to make easy, functional, and decorative pottery. We’ll process your creations in the Studio, and your finished pieces will be glazed and functional. Projects include mugs, bowls, trays, a keepsake box and even a whimsical rocket ship! This class is suitable for beginners and anyone who wants to play with clay. No prior experience is needed.

CERAMIC JEWELRY

Ages 15+
Create your own beautiful ceramic jewelry! In this 2-week workshop, you’ll learn how to transform clay into beads, pendants, and earrings. The first week will focus on molding jewelry using porcelain clay. The second week will be dedicated to glazing. Tips for assembling your jewelry using wire and findings will also be covered. Ceramic pieces will be ready approximately 2 weeks after the workshop. Jewelry assembly is completed at home. Fee includes clay, tools, firing, and some jewelry wire. A list of optional jewelry findings will be provided during the first week.

DECORATIVE TILES

Ages 15+
Make a beautiful decorative tile! Tiles make great coasters and trays or can simply be hung on the wall. Experienced artist and designer Liza will walk you through the process of designing and creating a bold piece of art, using brightly colored ceramic underglazes, and carving and sgraffito techniques. This workshop is a great way for total beginners to try working with clay, and also for experienced potters to learn a new decorative technique. No previous experience is needed. Fee includes all materials. Pieces will be ready to pick up approximately 2 weeks after class.

One of our instructors will be available in the studio to answer questions and offer feedback. There will not be any formal instruction during the class. PRE-REQUISITE: Intermediate/Advanced Wheel Throwing, previously enrolled in Open Studio, or studio supervisor’s approval.

Ceramics Private Lessons

Ages: 6+ for hand-building, 12+ for wheel throwing

We offer private lessons on the pottery wheel (adults and teens age 15+) and for hand-building (adults and kids age 6+). Lessons can be scheduled weekly, or as single or limited sessions to create a specific project or help you overcome a particular pottery challenge.
