Ceramics

The Champaign Park District offers a full range of ceramics classes for anyone ages 6 and up. Classes are taught by experienced instructors who are gifted at bringing out the artist in you. Their wealth of experience, education, and knowledge will truly make this an enjoyable experience for you and/or your family. We also offer group workshops.


COVID Health Precautions

Participants will be provided with tools and towels to use during class. No waiting area will be provided, only registered participants are allowed in the building. Additional information will be provided before the class starts.

Create Your Own Workshop

FAMILY POTTERY WORKSHOP

Ages 6+ with parent/guardian
Ever get jealous of your kids when they get to take art classes? Join them! This three week workshop will let the family get creative together. Learn how to use coil, slab, and pinch to create unique works of art. No clay experience needed. Fee includes all clay, glazes, tools, and firing costs.

Looking for a unique date night activity that is sure to impress? Sign up with a friend and learn the secrets of throwing pottery on the wheel in a fun and relaxed environment. You will learn the basics of wheel throwing and make a piece or two to keep!. No experience needed! Pottery will be ready for pick up in about 2 weeks. MOTHER’S DAY POTTERY

Ages 5+ with parent/guardian
Spend some quality time with Mom! In this fun multi-generational workshop, families will work together to create and decorate a special piece of pottery. Open to parents of all genders and children ages 5 plus. (Children must be accompanied by an adult participant; limit 2 children per adult). Pottery will be ready for pick up in about 2 weeks. Ages 13-17
Teens will learn handbuilding techniques to create functional and sculptural pieces, and be introduced to working on the pottery wheel. POTS FOR TOTS

Ages 3-5 with parent/guardian
Bring your littlest artist along for a new creative experience! You and your small child will work together to make a piece of potter personalized with handprints, names, and their own artistic designs. Young children will enjoy the hands-on tactile quality of clay, and your finished piece will be permanent and food-safe. Pieces will be ready for pick up in approximately 2 weeks. MONSTER MAY-NIA

Ages 6-12
Let your imagination run wild and create a May medley of monsters! Fierce or friendly? Fangs or fins? Teeth or claws? Kids will use pinch and coil techniques to sculpt and decorate their own imaginary creatures from clay. During the first class we will sculpt our monsters and during the second we’ll paint them with brightly colored ceramics underglazes. No experience needed. Fee includes all materials. Create a rocket ship that is out of this world! Kids will learn pottery hand-building techniques to sculpt and decorate a clay rocket that doubles as a box (to hold secret space stuff, of course). VIRTUAL POTTERY CLASS

Ages 15+
Learn to create beautiful hand-made pottery in the comfort of your home. The instruction in this class is virtual, but the pottery and the fun are very real! We will loan you a Pottery Kit that includes basic tools, a canvas work surface, project templates, and 25 lbs of clay. In a series of instructional videos, our staff will walk you through everything you need to know to make easy, functional and decorative pottery. We’ll process your creations in the studio. Projects include mugs, bowls, trays, a keepsake box, and even a whimsical rocket ship! This class is suitable for beginners and anyone who wants to play with clay. No prior experience is needed.

DECORATIVE TILES

Ages 15+
Make a beautiful decorative tile! Tiles make great coasters and trays or can simply be hung on the wall. Our experienced staff will walk you through the process of designing and creative a bold piece of art, using brightly colored ceramics underglazes, and carving and sgraffito techniques. This workshop is a great way for total beginners to try working with clay, and also for experienced potters to learn a new decorative technique. No previous experience is needed. MAKE A MUG

Ages 15+
Learn how to make beautiful mugs without using a pottery wheel! We will use slab and hand-building techniques to create unique, fully functional mugs. In addition to learning basic methods for shaping clay, you will learn about the ceramic process and finish your pieces with ceramic glazes. This class is perfect for beginners with no previous clay experience and is also for potters who usually work on the wheel to expand their skills. Finished pieces will be food safe and can be put in the microwave or dishwasher. Fee includes all materials. Pottery will be ready to pick up approximately two weeks after the workshop.

PRESSED LEAF DISHES

Ages 15+
Let’s play with clay and leaves! In this popular seasonal workshop, we’ll make lovely and functional dishes using clay slab imprinted with real leaves. Bring your own leaves (the bigger the better) or you can choose from a selection of hand-picked leaves available during class. During the first class we will sculpt our pieces, and during the second we’ll finish them with ceramic glass glazes. No clay experience needed! Fee includes all materials. Wheel Throwing

BEGINNING WHEEL THROWING

This class is intended for students who are familiar with the basics of pottery, but want to refine their skills. Each class will feature a demonstration, but there’s room for personal development. Recommended prerequisite classes: Studio Ceramics or Beginning Wheel Throwing. Recommended skills: ability to center clay and throw a 5” cylinder. Fee includes all clay, glazes and firing costs. Get more studio time outside of class! Five hours of open studio time are scheduled based on studio space and staff availability, to ensure safe social distancing. Open Studio does not include instruction; patrons are encouraged to bring their own tools and a towel. Patrons may add and pay for additional hours as needed. Ceramics Private Lessons

Ages: 6+ for hand-building, 15+ for wheel throwing

We offer private lessons on the pottery wheel (adults and teens age 15+) and for hand-building (adults and kids age 6+). Lessons can be scheduled weekly, or as single or limited sessions to create a specific project or help you overcome a particular pottery challenge.
