Summer Art Smart Kids

Ages 3-5 not in Kindergarten
Develop your child’s creativity, imagination, and self-expression through activities in music, creative drama, story telling, crafts, two and three dimensional art projects and field trips. Sessions 01-02, 03-04, and 05-06 will provide different activities for participants.

Art Smart for the Older Generation 

1st – 3rd graders
Develop your child’s creativity, imagination, and self-expression through activities in painting, drawing, printmaking, crafts, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, and design. Session 01 will focus on two dimensional art, session 02 on three dimensional art, and session 03 on crafts.

Anime & Manga: How to Draw Characters

Ages 11+
Study the dynamic and imaginative art of Japan’s greatest and current Anime (cartoons) & Manga (comic) artists. Learn the techniques and materials used by professional artists in Japan and American, as we explore and discuss examples. Discover ways to draw people and characters expressively and accurately. Learn drawing techniques and character building to bring your characters to life. This class may be repeated to continue developing skills. A supply list of around $30 is required.

Anime & Manga: Color Techniques

Ages 13+
Colors and pop culture come together in Color Techniques! Learn and use basic color theory and techniques professional artists use to create their lush and colorful illustrations. We will explore how artists use lighting and how to apply them to create emotional effects. We will also engage in exercises to discover your own personal color style and how to express it! A supply list of approximately $50 will print at the time of registration.

Cartooning for Adults – NEW!

Ages 18+ | Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Get in touch with your humorous side with this 6-week class. Learn to think like a cartoonist by observing your world and creating your own brand of single panel cartoons, comic strips, and one page stories. Exercises will be fun for all skill levels. Cartooning techniques will be discussed and your own personal style will be developed.  A supply list of approximately $25 will print at the time of registration.

Comics for Kids

Ages 6-11
Explore the world of comics! Comic strips, comic books, and even manga will be our creative inspiration. Students will create characters and build stories and worlds. Learn new drawing and discovery techniques to bring our stories to life and share with others. A supply list of around $15 is required.

The Flowers of Summer

Ages 18+ | Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Have you ever wished you could paint flowers but thought it was too complicated? Each week, new flowers will serve as models as you learn how to simplify this traditional favorite. Paula McCarty, MFA will help you develop the tools to create the illusion of glass, water, and air. New students can expect a materials list of approximately $100 while existing painters may need to augment their current supplies.

Intermediate Watercolor – Flowers & Still Life

Ages 18+
Beginning watercolor or portfolio required. Develop your technique further using flowers and still life. Learn principles to further your painting and how to successfully execute wet on wet techniques and other brush work to achieve what you want in your work. We will study your photos and live still life in class. All activities have one-on-one instruction from local illustrator Kelli Roos. A supply list of around $95 will print at the time of registration.

The Themes of Summer

Ages 6-11
Using summertime topics such as flowers, water activities, and fun food, students will become familiar with the fundamentals of drawing and painting. They will learn how to use geometric shapes to construct images, experiment with mixing paint, and more. Projects may include still life, landscape, or portraiture. Paint supplied. A supply list of approximately $20 is required.

Sketch Your World

Ages 14+
Be creative on your own terms! Sketchbooks are a small, yet amazing creative  tool for you to express yourself anytime, anywhere. Learn techniques on how to see and draw the world around you quickly and expressively. We’ll learn ways to expand your creativity so you can create the world inside your head beautifully in the pages of your sketchbook. A supply list of approximately $6–$15 is required.

Summer Still Life

Ages 18+ | Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Still life painting is an exceptional way to explore the fundamentals of paint and painting. The focus of this workshop is direct observation of simple still life. Students will learn about tonal and chromatic develop­ment, composition, and the handling of paint as they paint from summer inspired still life. Paula McCarty, who holds a MFA, will conduct the workshop. New students can expect a materials list of approximately $100 while existing painters may need to augment their current supplies.
