Youth Programs

 Unleash your inner creative creature at Art Beast! Participants ages 5-11 will create works of art using recycled materials. Join us Saturday, February 5. All materials are supplied in this fun and affordable workshop.

Mad Scientists is part of our School’s Out Days. Join staff at Leonard Recreation Center on Monday, February 21 as we explore science while expanding our senses. Please pack a morning snack and a sack lunch.

Wiggle, Giggle, Climb & Play is a physical activity class for fun and learning. Creative movement, basic ball skills, musical games, and combination parent-tot exercises will be included. The class meets Thursdays from February 17 to March 24. A variety of equipment will be available for parent-tot play after the organized activities in the preschool playscape.

Teen sick of winter? We’re traveling to Iron Coyote Challenge Park in Bloomington, IL for a Thrillcation. We will try their ninja course, climbing wall, and zip lines on Monday, February 21. Each participant should wear clean, closed-toed athletic style shoes that have no dirt or sticky substances on the bottom; no slip-ons or Crocs. Lunch will be provided.

It’s preschool 101 with ABC’s & 123’s! Each Monday, the class will focus on a specific theme such as safety, exercise, science, manners, the alphabet, numbers, and colors. Running from February 28 to April 11, classes will center on small and large motor skills, sensory experiences, and socialization skills. Kids will have so much fun, they won’t even know they are learning! Parents may participate with their child.

Sports & Fitness

Project Athletes offers speed, agility, and conditioning training — a place to belong and a team to be a part of. Join us at the Leonhard Recreation Center as we partner with Project Athletes, a program designed to improve personal athletic ability and personal growth development of athletes in 3rd-8th grade.

Boot Camp is an intermediate/advanced circuit training style class that incorporates cardio, bodyweight exercises, strength conditioning, and athletic drills to ensure the muscle and performance change you are looking for. In Boot Camp, we will start as a team and finish as a team! Join us on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings to get your heart pumping!

We are pumped to bring Strength Training back to the Leonhard Recreation Center. Tone and sculpt your whole body. Participants learn the building blocks you need to help you transform your body. This class is designed for all fitness levels.

Warm up and feel the love at our Valentine’s Day Hot Chocolate Bar event on Friday, February 11! We will have lots of hot chocolate with all the fixin’s, plus sweet treats galore! After you have drunk to your heart’s content, we will keep the fun going with Valentine’s Day themed games!

Senior Strength is for active seniors 55+. We will focus on exercise to improve your balance and confidence with a total body workout. Learn how to move your body in a healthy way with chair exercises, standing weight bearing exercises, stretching, and more! Modifications can be made for each movement. Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

A CPR dummy for first aid traning

Heartsaver First Aid covers topics ranging from heart attacks and strokes to animal bites and allergic reactions. Also covered is CPR for the adult, child and infant victim, and AED use. A CPR certification card will be given after successful completion of class on Saturday, February 19th.

Looking to add a second language to your repertoire? Check out our Virtual Spanish classes! We have sections for elementary school, middle school, high school, and adult learners. That’s What She Said is back at the Virginia Theatre for its 7th installment of local women sharing personal stories! This special night will make you belly laugh and ugly cry and everything in between. Hear these stories on Saturday, February 26.

Artists and art enthusiasts are encouraged to enter the Town and Country Amateur Art Show. Town & Country shows are held throughout the state to encourage quality work by amateur artists. The exhibit runs from April 2-30 with the juror’s critique on April 30.  Blue ribbon winners from local shows are eligible to participate in the State Town and Country Art Show in the fall.

There will be a public critique by the juror on the last day of the show.  The juror will discuss the art, point out good technique, and offer helpful suggestions to those artists wishing to refine their talent.
