Pottery Programs

The Champaign Park District offers a full range of pottery and ceramics classes for anyone ages 3 and up. Classes are taught by experienced instructors who are gifted at bringing out the artist in you. Their wealth of experience, education, and knowledge will truly make this an enjoyable experience for you and/or your family. We also offer group workshops. Check out our information on Group Pots-Abilities listed below. Our pottery studio is located at Springer Cultural Center.

Pottery for Kids I

Ages 6-10
Kids will be led through a different fun project each week and they get to keep what they make! Basic forming and decorating techniques will be taught and then refined as well as an introduction to the potter’s wheel. All ability and experience levels are welcome. Fee includes all clay, glazes, tools, and firing costs.

Pottery for Kids II

Ages 9-12
Kids will be given different projects each week. They will learn various handbuilding and pottery wheel techniques and be encouraged to both refine their skills and get creative. All ability and experience levels are welcome. Fee includes all clay, glazes, tools, and firing costs.

Pottery for Teens

Ages 13-17
Teens will be taught both handbuilding and pottery wheel techniques and given the space to express themselves. All ability and experience levels are welcome. Fee includes all clay, glazes, tools, and firing costs.

Parent & Child PotteryPreschool

Ages 8+ with parent/guardian
Ever get jealous of your kids, when they get to take art classes? Why not join them? This class will let you get creative together. Different projects and various forming and decorating technique will be introduced each week. All ability and experience levels are welcome. Fee includes all clay, glazes, tools, and firing costs.

Studio Ceramics

Ages 18+
Have you ever played with clay? If you have, you are probably hooked. If you haven’t, here is your chance to learn a range of techniques, from handbuilding to throwing on the wheel. Experienced students will get the opportunity to refine their skills or to explore advanced techniques. All ability and experience levels are welcome. Saturday Adult Pottery

Ages 18+ 
What better way is there to spend a Saturday afternoon than playing with clay? Here is your chance to learn a range of techniques, from handbuilding to throwing on the wheel. Experienced students will get
the opportunity to refine their skills or to explore advanced techniques. All ability and experience levels are welcome. Fee includes all clay, glazes, tools, and firing costs.

Open Studio TimePottery

Ages 18+ with experience
(must have taken two sessions of Park District pottery classes or describe previous experience at orientation)
Do you have experience with clay and want a little time to make ceramics? Not getting enough time in the studio during your pottery class? Here’s the opportunity that can fulfill those needs. You can buy time by the hour as you need it. Schedule an orientation with the pottery studio supervisor by emailing michelle.olden@champaignparks.com or calling 217-819-3909.

Advanced Methods for Potters

Ages 18+ 
This class is intended for students who are familiar with the basics of pottery, but want to refine their skills. We will base the class on the particular needs of the participants, but will include focused instruction on throwing, pulling handles, and making lids that fit. Students will learn to make better bottles, plates, mugs, tea pots and to refine their glazing techniques. Join us for some individualized attention on your unique needs and interests.

Intensive Throwing Workshops- NEW!

Ages 18+
Want to level up your throwing skills? Immerse yourself in this 2 week intensive throwing course! Learn how to throw plates, large bowls, lidded jars, and teapots from Springer Cultural Center ceramic instructor Liza Wynette. The first class will consist of demos, personalized instruction, and studio time. The second class will be dedicated to glazing.

Prerequisite: Students must have completed one session of Studio Ceramics
Recommended: Proficient at centering clay and can throw a 5” cylinder.

IUnderglaze Workshop: Sgraffito, Slip Trailing, & Mishima- NEW!

Ages 18+
Join ceramic instructor Liza Wynette for a hands-on workshop exploring underglaze decoration techniques. Learn how to carve, incise, draw, and paint expressive designs that will add another layer of interest to your work. Bring your own greenware or decorate pre-made tiles.

Note: Workshop does not include wheel or hand-building time.
Recommended experience: Past or current participation in a Springer Cultural Center clay class.

Group Pots-Abilities

Clay is fun for everyone! Bring your Girl or Boy Scout Troop, seniors club, co-workers, bridal showers, corporate team, or even your neighbors for a special group workshop. We will create a workshop based on your group’s needs. Do some team-building, think outside the bowl, strengthen friendships, and flex the right side of your brain! Request a theme or style of pottery to learn for your group whether it be Indian, Korean, or other. Call Michelle at 217-398-2376 to schedule a workshop at least one month in advance.
