Pottery Programs

The Champaign Park District offers a full range of pottery and ceramics classes for anyone ages 3 and up. Classes are taught by experienced instructors who are gifted at bringing out the artist in you. Their wealth of experience, education, and knowledge will truly make this an enjoyable experience for you and/or your family. We also offer group workshops. Check out our information on Group Pots-Abilities listed below. Our pottery studio is located at Springer Cultural Center.

Parent & Child PotteryPreschool

Ages 8+ with parent/guardian
Explore a new way to bond with your kids – create pottery together! Your child will amaze you with their creativity and you will amaze them with yours! Learn to throw pots on the wheel, sculpt, coil, and build. Make tiles, cereal bowls, magical creatures, and more in this weekly class.
Online registration is not available for this program.

Creative Clay for Kids

Ages 6-9
Does your child like to play in the mud? Then they will love to play with clay! We will teach you the basics of forming and decorating and even how to use the potter’s wheel. No experience necessary. This class can be repeated for new challenging projects and techniques each week.


The Potter’s WheelPottery Owl

Ages 8-15
Here’s your chance to learn how to throw on the wheel! Whether you are new to pottery or you’re a wheel fanatic, this is the class for you. Students will learn basic throwing techniques and how to change and alter pots to make a finished product they can be proud of!


Studio Ceramics

Ages 18+
Take a night off from the lab, office, school, work, or worry. Let your neurons and muscles have a conversation about beauty and art. No experience required! Learn basic pottery skills including hand-building, coils, slabs, and the wheel. Learn to pull a handle, trim a foot, and join a slab. Unveil the mysteries of extrusion. If you have experience, we can help you with advanced techniques or give you the opportunity to pursue your own projects.

Saturday Adult Pottery

Ages 18+ 
Escape the stressors of the week and get creative! Students will learn pottery skills including handbuilding, coils, slabs, and the wheel. No experience necessary.

Open Studio TimePottery

Ages 18+ with experience
(must have taken two sessions of Park District pottery classes or describe previous experience at orientation)
Do you have experience with clay and want a little time to make ceramics? Not getting enough time in the studio during your pottery class? Here’s the opportunity that can fulfill those needs. You can buy time by the hour as you need it. Schedule an orientation with the pottery studio supervisor by emailing michelle.olden@champaignparks.com or calling 217-819-3909.

Advanced Methods for Potters

Ages 18+ 
This class is intended for students who are familiar with the basics of pottery, but want to refine their skills. We will base the class on the particular needs of the participants, but will include focused instruction on throwing, pulling handles, and making lids that fit. Students will learn to make better bottles, plates, mugs, tea pots and to refine their glazing techniques. Join us for some individualized attention on your unique needs and interests.

Group Pots-Abilities

Clay is fun for everyone! Bring your Girl or Boy Scout Troop, seniors club, co-workers, bridal showers, corporate team, or even your neighbors for a special group workshop. We will create a workshop based on your group’s needs. Do some team-building, think outside the bowl, strengthen friendships, and flex the right side of your brain! Request a theme or style of pottery to learn for your group whether it be Indian, Korean, or other. Call Michelle at 217-398-2376 to schedule a workshop at least one month in advance.
