Uniform Guidelines

Ballet/Contemporary Dress Code

General Rules

  • Jewelry should not be worn in class.
  • All dancewear and shoes must have the student’s name in permanent ink.  Dance Arts is not responsible for lost dance items.
  • No feathers or sequined items will be allowed in the studio.
  • Female students do not wear undergarments with tights.

General Supplies

All dance students need a bag large enough to carry required pairs of shoes.  Also, Dance Arts female students should carry a smaller bag to class containing the following items:  hair brush, hair pins, bobby  pins, clips hair nets, hair elastics, and safety pins.

Students who are not properly prepared (hair and uniform) may be asked to sit out.

Short hair – should be pulled back off the face with clips, barrettes, bobby pins, or fabric headbands.

Medium length hair (too short for a bun) – ponytails or pigtails.

Longer hair – should always be secured in a neat and tidy bun, using hair pins and hair nets.  Wisps should be secured bobby pins, clips, barrettes, where needed.

Female students enrolled in supplemental technique classes should wear pink tights and pink ballet shoes.  The leotard is the student’s choice of style and color.

Ballet Shoes

Level 1- 4 need full-soled leather ballet shoes.

Level 5-6 are allowed leather split-soles.

Demi-pointe shoes are strongly suggested by staff for Level 5-6 for classwork.  However, they may not be worn for Examinations.

Ballet shoes are to fit snugly to the foot with a maximum of ¼” growth allowance.  Proper ballet shoes must be purchased from a dance supply store.  These shoes will stretch with the child’s foot creating a comfortable fit.  Inferior brands from discount stores are stiff and dangerous for a student to wear, due to the foot slipping around inside the shoe.  The $4 you might save is not worth having a distracted child, worrying about trying not to trip in an ill-fitting shoe.

Body hugging legwarmers and sweaters may only be worn in class in colder months.

Adult students will be given flexibility in dance wear.  Please ask instructor.

Dance shorts or jazz pants may be worn for Contemporary dance classes.  Any color/style leotard will be fine.  Jazz shoes may be worn, but ballet shoes or bare feet will suffice.
Examinations require that uniforms be in pristine condition. Please note that a second set of the uniform could possibly be needed.

Pointe Shoe Guidelines

It is a goal and a natural progression of ballet training to learn to dance in pointe shoes. However, since the human body was not designed to dance on the toes, careful training, personal dedication, and a strong commitment are needed before a dancer is allowed to begin dancing in pointe shoes. If a child begins to dance in pointe shoes too early, significant injury can result. Therefore, the dance staff takes the decision of whether or not your child is ready for pointe shoes very seriously. The Dance Arts staff will assess when and if a student has met the guidelines for pointe shoe instruction.

The guidelines are as follows:

1. Age of the student. The Dance Arts staff will not evaluate a student until she is 12 or 13 years of age. By that age, the muscles and bones are usually at the end of the major growth period, creating a strong, yet supple foot.

2. Back strength. The back must be strong, and the alignment of the shoulders over the pelvis will be evaluated and monitored.

3. Flexibility. The flexibility of the body and especially of the foot will be evaluated.

4. Student determination and dedication. By this stage of ballet training, a student should be dancing a minimum of 4 ½ hours per week in order to maintain top physical strength and flexibility. The Dance Arts staff cannot place a student in pointe shoes without this dedication.

5. For students taking classes at multiple studios – if another teacher has put the student on pointe, and we feel the student is not ready, the student will not be allowed to wear them in the Dance Arts studio.

6. Injuries incurred at other studios will not be the responsibility of Dance Arts.

Because of the class time required for pointe shoe instruction and the expense of pointe shoes, the Dance Arts staff encourages the dedication of students and parents. Pointe shoes average $60 to $80 per pair. A pair of pointe shoes can last five minutes to three months before they “break” or wear out.

A member of the Dance Arts staff should be at the first pointe shoe fitting. If this isn’t possible, keep the receipt for the shoes, do not wear them, or sew on any elastic or ribbons until the fit has been checked by a staff member.
